Job Description
The Nordic Africa Institute’s African Scholar Program is targeted at researchers based in Africa who need time and a conducive environment for finishing and writing up their ongoing research. The Senior Researcher position is offered at the Nordic Africa Institute for the duration of 12 months. The Nordic Africa Institute is looking for a qualified senior researcher from an African universitie or research institution with a demonstrable record of accomplishment.

NAI would especially welcome research with relevance to the following themes:


• The African continent / countries and the changing face of geopolitics or security issues and roles played by external forces
• Energy, energy transition and resource politics
• The African Union, women and gender equity
• Urbanisation, mobilities, and demographic transition

Successful candidates might use the period of employment at NAI to complete on-going research, develop a new research project, or complete articles, a book or monograph manuscript. A scholar-researcher should take advantage of the intellectual and logistical resources of the Nordic Africa Institute and expect to contribute meaningfully towards actualizing NAI’s vision and mandate and its policy outreach activities in return.

This position falls under the Institute’s African Scholar Program. The research may take a comparative view or present in-depth analysis on a specific country focus. Strong emphasis at NAI is upon contextually informed, well nuanced, field based research in the qualitative social sciences or in economics.

Qualifications

• A PhD degree in anthropology, geography, sociology, gender studies, international development, development economics or related subject.
• It is essential the applicant has 7 or more years’ experience post-PhD conducting academic research.
• A current research/teaching position in university or research institution in Africa.
• Record of high quality scholarly research.
• Strong ability to present complex issues to non-academic audiences.
• Demonstrated track record in science communication and policy/practice engagement with non-academic stakeholders.
• Knowledge of African scientific communities, and policy environments, and other stakeholders and actors relevant to the research topic.
• Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
• Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English.

The application
The application should contain:

A) Proposal not exceeding 5 pages presenting:
(i) A realistic work plan for the length of stay at the institute – detailing proposed intellectual activities, expected outputs (such as publications, dissemination activities, participation at seminar/workshop/conference activities, and policy engagements);
(ii) Presentation of the on-going research project(s) – objective, questions, theory and method;

B) A complete CV with a list of scientific publications where it is clearly indicated which publications are formally considered as peer reviewed.

C) Indication of internet addresses to the applicant’s own publications relating to his/her research (a maximum of three publications)

D) Evidence of policy engagement / science-policy communication to non-academic audiences (a 1 page summary, or up to three non-academic outputs)

E) Names and contact details of at least two references.

As part of the recruitment process, shortlisted candidates will be invited to present their proposed research projects for the Nordic Africa Institute via Zoom.

Condition of Service
Contract period will be 12 months and expected start of date is as early as possible in 2023.

Salary is negotiable within the Institute’s current salary levels and remuneration packages. The position includes attractive benefits and conditions offered for employees of Swedish civil service.

Arbetsuppgifter
Arbetet kommer att utföras som en del av Migration Policy Database (MIGPOL), som finansieras av Vetenskapsrådet som en del av infrastrukturprojektet Demscore. Projektet tillhandahåller högkvalitativa jämförande data om migrationspolitik samt immigranternas politiska, sociala och ekonomiska rättigheter ur ett globalt perspektiv. MIGPOL är en sammanställningsdatabas som samlar indikatorer från ledande dataprojekt inom området jämförande migrationspolitik. Det är en del av ett omfattande nationellt och internationellt forskningssamarbete.

Projektassistenterna kommer att arbeta med professor Joakim Palme och andra forskare vid statsvetenskapliga institutionen för att samla in information för en uppdatering av databasen "Every Emigrant is an Immigrant" (IMISEM). Projektet omfattar migrationspolitik i 32 länder i Asien, Europa och Latinamerika. Huvuduppgiften är att granska och verifiera källorna i den ursprungliga datainsamlingen och uppdatera informationen för senare år. Uppdateringen förväntas ta en månad för varje land. Längden på kontraktet kommer att bero på antalet länder som respektive assistent kommer att täcka (upp till tre månader/länder).

Kvalifikationskrav
Pågående universitetsstudier inom statsvetenskap eller annat samhällsvetenskapligt ämne. Mycket goda kunskaper i Microsoft (Word, Excel) och Zoom. Noggrannhet, självständighet, god analytisk förmåga och mycket god förmåga att förstå och uttrycka sig på engelska är alla nödvändiga förutsättningar för att komma i fråga för tjänsten.

Projektet kräver vidare mycket starka språkkunskaper i det primära språket som talas i ett eller flera av de länder som omfattas av IMISEM: Argentina, Bolivia, Brasilien, Chile, Folkrepubliken Kina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominikanska republiken, Ecuador, El Salvador, Frankrike, Tyskland, Guatemala, Ungern, Indonesien, Japan, Malaysia, Mexiko, Peru, Filippinerna, Portugal, Singapore, Sydkorea, Spanien, Taiwan, Trinidad och Tobago, Uruguay, Österrike och Östtimor.

Ytterligare kvalifikationer
Ett intresse för och tidigare erfarenhet av jämförande migrationspolitisk forskning är meriterande. Arbetsuppgifter 
Denna utlysning sker inom ramen för forskningsprojektet Tillits-, trygghets- och gemenskapsbarometern som leds av professor Lars Trägårdh.

Arbetet inkluderar att i samarbete med projektledaren och övriga deltagare i projektet bedriva självständig forskning inom ramen för projektets syfte och frågeställningar. Arbetsuppgiften består i att med ekonometriska metoder studera stora mängder data om tillit, trygghet, mångfald och försvarsvilja.

Kvalifikationskrav
För att vara behörig till tjänsten måste sökanden ha avlagt doktorsexamen i nationalekonomi och ha erfarenhet av att självständigt bedriva forskning om de frågor arbetsuppgiften handlar.

Projektets huvudsakliga arbetsspråk är svenska, därför är förmåga av att uttrycka sig muntligt och skriftligt på svenska ett krav. Övriga språkkunskaper är meriterande.

Önskvärt/meriterande i övrigt

About the Nordic Africa Institute

The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) is a Swedish government agency and has a unique mandate to produce research and inform policy which is relevant to support development in Africa. We intend to develop our role further as the Nordic hub for Africa focused research, documentation and policy advice and we are therefore looking for an experienced researcher who is enthusiastic about contributing to NAI’s research and policy work in the coming years. 

The Institute has since its establishment in 1962 been an important research, documentation and information centre on modern Africa in the Nordic countries. NAI is jointly financed by the governments of Sweden, Finland and Iceland, and promotes research on and knowledge of contemporary Africa in the Nordic countries, as well as cooperation between mainly African and Nordic researchers. The Institute also disseminates information on current African issues, through publications, seminars, conferences and various policy-related activities. 

Providing and supporting in-depth knowledge generation based on the voices of Africans, is fundamental to contribute to more resilient societies and achieving Agenda 2030 on the continent. We are a value-based organisation and believe that you are a person who actively shares your knowledge and are open to do systematic trend analyses beyond your field of expertise.

The Institute is currently implementing a five-year strategy, 2022-2026, which has promoting academic and policy-oriented research programmes on Africa in the Nordic countries as one of its strategic goals. It is in pursuit of this goal that NAI is looking for a post-doctoral researcher in the area of political development with demonstrable experience in academic and policy-relevant research on African issues to join its team of resident researchers. 

The position is targeted towards a researcher with current residence and professional affiliation in Finland and for the duration of two years.

As an applicant you should have experience of empirical research on the African continent, be able to work in a social-science led yet interdisciplinary environment, and be open to building your capacity on how to translate knowledge from research into policy relevant messages and policy engagement. Strong communication skills are highly valuable for this position.

Qualifications 

Essential


• A PhD in relevant social science discipline, including political science, international relations, development studies, political geography, etc.
• The doctoral degree must have been obtained within the last three years, or up to five years if special circumstances apply, prior to the application deadline.
• Proven social science methodological skills.
• Experience conducting empirical research in an African context.
• To be eligible to apply for the position you must have an affiliation to a Finnish university or research institute.
• Strong analytical skills including the use of quantitative and/or qualitative research techniques.
• Excellent knowledge of the English language, and competences and skills in effective communication.

• Expertise in data sources and data processing for comparative research.

Under the direct supervision and guidance of Assem Abu Hatab, Senior Researcher, the successful candidate will support research on the project titled “Migration intensions and aspirations in water-stressed communities in Egypt”. The project operationalizes a theoretical model to investigate the role of sociodemographic, technological, physical, psychological, behavioral and institutional drivers that shape individuals’ decisions to migrate in the context of water scarcity. The findings will contribute to a nuanced understanding of the relationship between water stress and migration patterns, informing future policy recommendations and sustainable development strategies for water-stressed regions in Egypt.

 

Objective of the internship 
Research interns at NAI learn from an interdisciplinary environment which offer interns the opportunity to gain knowledge on the subject area as well as working in a research institution. Under the direction of the project leader, the intern will primarily be focusing on key duties but also get a chance to participate in some institutional activities.

Key duties

• Conduct a literature review to document existing knowledge and approaches for assessing the impact of urban agriculture on food security and resilience in low- and middle-income countries.
• Clean and conduct exploratory statistical analysis of datasets in Excel and Stata.
• Provide other research, writing and editing support for project deliverables.
• Facilitate communication with the project partners in Sweden and Egypt.
• Actively participate in planning and organizing two digital meetings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications and required skills

• The potential candidate must be enrolled in (or graduated from) a MSc program in economics, rural and development studies, or other fields related to the project theme.
• Familiarity with issues related to water scarcity and agricultural sector development, migration and mobility in African countries is a plus.

About the project

Africa’s escalating external debt has become a growing concern, as both debt stock and servicing obligations are soaring to alarming levels across the continent. Contributing factors include limited revenue generation, ineffective public financial management systems, and external shocks such as the Covid-19 pandemic, commodity price fluctuations resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and climate-related disasters. This mounting debt hampers government spending on crucial services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, hindering socioeconomic progress and worsening poverty and food insecurity. A new project at NAI will be launched soon to explore the links between debt levels and food security and nutrition on the continent. The project’s findings are expected to offer valuable insights for national governments and international stakeholders to promote sustainable debt management and support economic resilience and growth.

Key duties

We are recruiting a Research Assistant (RA) to support our project team with various tasks associated with this project. Specifically, the main duties of the holder of this position will include the following:  


• Conducting a comprehensive literature review to document existing evidence on the interlinkages between external debt and food security in low- and middle-income countries;
• Gathering and cleaning data on African debt, macroeconomic indicators, and food security and nutrition from selected databases, and performing preliminary statistical analysis of datasets using Excel and Stata;
• Aiding the study coordinator in designing and executing empirical analyses;
• Providing research, writing, and editing assistance for various project outputs; and
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Competence:

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and skills:


• A Master’s degree (MSc) in development economics or a related field relevant to the project’s theme.
• Knowledge regarding issues pertaining to Africa’s development challenges, including food insecurity and debt, is advantageous.
• Good quantitative and analytical skills, with proficiency in using statistical software and programming languages such as STATA, SPSS, or R, are required.
• Excellent academic writing abilities and a high level of proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Knowledge in Swedish is considered a merit but not mandatory.
• The candidate will be supervised by a NAI researcher; but should have an ability to work independently.
• Emphasis will also be given to personal suitability.

Desirable/merit

• Knowledge of parties and politics in conflicts in Africa, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Libya, the Sahel and Somalia
• Good knowledge of data science software for quantitative and qualitative data analysis
• Some knowledge of African research centres, networks and universitities
• Academic or policy research publication record

Job Description

This research assistant position’s role is to support the consolidation of research on Africa’s Copperbelt Agenda for its Strategic Minerals. The assistant shall participate in research, events and publication processes and assist in outreach to Nordic and African decision-makers.

Key duties


• Reviewing and writing up summaries of news, policy documents and announcements on mining related infrastructural developments (rail, road, port, energy, border infrastructure) in the Southern African Development Community (with a specific focus on those connected to Zambia)
• Mapping of actors (local, national and global) involved in these infrastructural developments and charting financial commitments announced.
• Locating maps and images related to these developments
• Literature search and review of academic work written in relation to mining related infrastructure development in this region).
• Organizing related research material in an accessible filing format.
• Supporting the organization of workshops and policy events.

Qualifications and required skills 


• Master's degree in Rural Development and Natural Resource Management, Human Geography, Sustainable Development or equivalent topic (or ongoing degree to be finished before the start of the employment)

Job Description
This research assistant position’s role is to support the consolidation of research on Africa, the UN Security Council and women, peace and security. The assistant shall participate in research, events and publication processes and assist in outreach to Nordic and African decision-makers.

Key duties
Under the direction and in cooperation with the project leader, the research assistant shall  


• Assist in the process of completing ethical review documentation submission to NAI research coordination and leadership.
• Finalize organizational plans for fieldwork in Addis Ababa and Nairobi.
• Support the launch events of publications and dissemination in policy events in Addis Ababa, Copenhagen and Stockholm in Spring 2024.
• Participate in research design and data collection, schedule interviews in-country and online, and transcribe interviews.
• Prepare an academic literature review on women, peace and security in advance of the twenty-fifth anniversary of UN Security Council resolution 1325.
• Organize the development and dissemination of a step-by-step guide for Nvivo qualitative data analysis, including consulting project researchers and utilizing previously collected documentation and original source information.
• Assist in the organization of a stakeholder meeting of experts, diplomats, UN officials and researchers in the projects and record a guided discussion on multilateralism and inclusive peace and security in Africa.
• Collect data for, and if agreed co-author commentaries on 1) elected states and the UN, 2) Africa and the Summit of the Future in 2024, and 3) women, peace and security lessons for the E10.
• Gather media reports and data on Africa, G77 and Summit of the Future objectives and outcomes.
• Support research proposal development by organizing research cooperation key personnel for preparatory meetings.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Peace and Conflict studies or an education deemed equivalent
• Knowledge of the UN and international peace and security literature
• Knowledge of political violence and theories of peace and conflict
• Knowledge of empirical research principles
• Excellent English in speech and writing
• Knowledge of research centres, networks and universities in the Nordic countries
• Proven ability for independent work, reliability, flexibility and being pro-active

It is in pursuit of this goal that NAI is looking for a post-doctoral researcher in the area of political development with demonstrable experience in academic and policy-relevant research on African issues to join its team of resident researchers. 

The position is targeted towards a researcher with current residence and professional affiliation in Finland and for the duration of two years.

As an applicant you should have experience of empirical research on the African continent, be able to work in a social-science led yet interdisciplinary environment, and be open to building your capacity on how to translate knowledge from research into policy relevant messages and policy engagement. Strong communication skills are highly valuable for this position.

Qualifications 

Essential


• A PhD in relevant social science discipline, including political science, international relations, development studies, political geography, etc.

• Experience conducting empirical research in an African context.
• To be eligible to apply for the position you must have an affiliation to a Finnish university or research institute.

Under the direct supervision and guidance of Assem Abu Hatab, Senior Researcher, the successful candidate will support research on the project titled “Migration intensions and aspirations in water-stressed communities in Egypt”. The project operationalizes a theoretical model to investigate the role of sociodemographic, technological, physical, psychological, behavioral and institutional drivers that shape individuals’ decisions to migrate in the context of water scarcity. The findings will contribute to a nuanced understanding of the relationship between water stress and migration patterns, informing future policy recommendations and sustainable development strategies for water-stressed regions in Egypt.

 

Objective of the internship 
Research interns at NAI learn from an interdisciplinary environment which offer interns the opportunity to gain knowledge on the subject area as well as working in a research institution. Under the direction of the project leader, the intern will primarily be focusing on key duties but also get a chance to participate in some institutional activities.

Key duties

• Conduct a literature review to document existing knowledge and approaches for assessing the impact of urban agriculture on food security and resilience in low- and middle-income countries.
• Clean and conduct exploratory statistical analysis of datasets in Excel and Stata.
• Provide other research, writing and editing support for project deliverables.
• Facilitate communication with the project partners in Sweden and Egypt.
• Actively participate in planning and organizing two digital meetings.
